Richard Seymour: How Beauty Feels

4. Elaborate on the quote from Anais Nin: “We see things not as they are but as we are”

This quote shows that we consider things beautiful for not what they are but how we see them through our perception and experience. In other words, everyone considers things in a different light. Someone may find something beautiful and uplifting, but someone else might think of that thing as sad and terrifying because it triggers some sad memory. Depending on the person you are, you could consider something small and simple beautiful if that is the type of person you are. Someone who is flamboyant and extraverted may find it boring and prefer something big and full of bling. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we all have different opinions.
